Picking Up the Pieces of Shattered Dreams:
Culturally Responsive Pedagogy as a 21st Century Imperative

December 12, 2007

MESPA Building, Marlborough, MA

Description

Our nation's educators have been perplexed with the reality of shattered dreams as it relates to the effective education of "all" children and youth in U.S. schools. Visions of a quality education grounded in the work of pioneers like Horace Mann and John Dewey, and enhanced by the culturally specific context of trailblazers like W.E.B Dubois, Carter G. Woodson, and Asa Hilliard have been unfulfilled for critical masses of children of difference. Dreams have been shattered for many 21st century learners, but educators are compelled to transform teaching and learning for these worthy learners through culturally responsive pedagogy. This session focused on the support and strategies necessary in picking up the pieces from shattered dreams through a process of cultural proficiency development. Such a process frames a systematic and systemic ideological and action network designed to improve the education of "all" learners, with a specific focus on transforming the academic environment of African American youth in Massachusetts' public schools.
